Charlotte Joko Beck (1917-2011) was an American Zen teacher who took up Zen practice in mid-life as the parent of four children. She eventually became a Zen teacher in the White Plum lineage. I found her two main books soon after I started meditating and found her style refreshing and unencumbered with dogma and strange concepts. They are collections of her talks, with some student Q&A. Each talk is stand-alone, and I have found myself returning to her books over and over again. I use some of her analogies in my own teaching, such as the ice-cubes metaphor.
The two books are: Everyday Zen: Love and Work, and Nothing Special: Living Zen. The language is direct, full of useful images, and very no-nonsense. Wherever you read Zen practice in her teaching you can almost always consider it mindfulness practice. Even if you are not a meditator, a lot of her psychological insights are useful.
